FAQ

What does cycle and fertility awareness mean?

Cycle and fertility awareness means learning to observe and understand your body's biomarkers throughout the menstrual cycle. By recognising how these signs change over time, you learn when ovulation is likely to occur, what your body's fertile and infertile patterns look like, and how these patterns repeat from cycle to cycle.

Who is this guidance for?

This guidance is for anyone who wants to better understand their menstrual cycle and fertility. Whether your goal is to improve your body literacy, plan a pregnancy, or avoid pregnancy using a hormone-free approach, you'll learn how to recognise and interpret your body's natural fertility signs.

You can also benefit from this guidance if you use a copper IUD, as non-hormonal contraception does not prevent you from observing your body's natural fertility signs. If you currently use hormonal contraception, these biomarkers cannot be interpreted in the same way. However, we can discuss your situation together and explore what type of guidance would be most beneficial for you.

Do I need a specific app or device?

No. You'll learn to use a cycle chart designed specifically for the Fertility Awareness Method (FAM), allowing you to record and interpret your body's biomarkers in a structured way. If you'd like, you can also use a thermometer or wearable device to measure your basal body temperature, but neither is required.

You're welcome to continue using your current app alongside the guidance. The skills you learn are applicable regardless of which app or device you use.

I already use an app (such as Natural Cycles, Flo or Clue). How will I benefit from guidance?

Apps are excellent tools for collecting observations and tracking your cycle. Sykli Start helps you understand which observations are most relevant in your own situation and what they actually mean. Together we'll look at how your body's biomarkers relate to one another, and how to interpret your own cycle patterns with greater confidence. You can continue using the app you already have throughout the programme.

What do FAM and FABM mean?

Fertility Awareness Methods (FAM) and Fertility Awareness-Based Methods (FABMs) are evidence-based approaches that use biological fertility biomarkers, such as cervical mucus and basal body temperature, to identify the fertile and infertile phases of the menstrual cycle. When properly learned and applied, these methods can be used both to achieve pregnancy and as a hormone-free approach to contraception.

You'll find links to reliable organisations and further reading at the bottom of this page.

How is this different from seeing a doctor?

Sykli provides personalised education and guidance in menstrual cycle and fertility awareness. It does not replace medical care, diagnosis, or treatment. If anything discussed during our sessions suggests that further medical assessment would be beneficial, we'll talk about it together and, when appropriate, I'll encourage you to seek advice from a healthcare professional. Guidance can also be valuable alongside medical care or ongoing investigations.

Why does Sykli Start last three cycles?

Every cycle, and every person, is different. Working together across three cycles allows enough time to build meaningful observations, recognise recurring patterns, and develop a more reliable understanding of your own cycle. It also gives you time to practise interpreting your body's biomarkers with confidence while receiving ongoing support along the way.
